Early Years
The Early Years program, for children ages five through seven years, spans enormous growth in physical, social and academic development. The goals during the early years are the mastery of the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics, as well as the development of crucial social skills and self-confidence as a learner. Class sizes range from eighteen to twenty-two children. Along with the classroom teacher there is a full-time assistant teacher in each homeroom.
The program is enriched by weekly classes with specialists in art, library, music and woodshop. During these times, the homeroom classes are divided in half to allow for more individualized group instruction. Physical education classes and recess provide daily opportunities for active play in the school gym, street-level yard and roof-top play area. Teachers conference with parents twice each year and progress reports are sent home in winter and spring.
