Exploring Needs & Wants on a Neighborhood Walk

In 1st Grade Social Studies, students have been working to develop an understanding of the distinction between “needs” and “wants” – and how communities like cities and neighborhoods are designed to meet the needs and wants of the individuals who live there. One important need we all share is transportation, and students learned all about the history of the New York Subway system and other local means of transportation through a virtual visit to the New York Transit Museum. Of course, there’s no need to travel far to get a real-life look at how VCS’s neighborhood of the West Village meets the wants and needs of the community: on just a short walk, 1st Graders noticed the local Post Office, doctors’ offices, homes and apartments, grocery stores, restaurants, gardens, schools and more!
