5th Graders Express their Interests Through Zines
Library class is often focused on reading, but it can also be a time when students become authors themselves, and this week 5th Graders began a new project where they will combine text, images and art to create their own zines. This creative project follows a study of what zines are, how people use them to express themselves and how they are intended to be published and reproduced for distribution. Students learned that zines can be made on any topic, and each chose a specific focus for their own zine, ranging from inspirational quotes by famous women, to places around the world, to the Beatles.
Students are using words, drawings, pictures from magazines, stickers, stencils and more to create their collage-style zines, which they will share with their fellow zine authors at “publication parties” following their completion.
