Fall Sports Season Officially Begins
With recent games for both the 7th and 8th Grade Soccer Team and the 7th and 8th Grade Volleyball team, the fall sports season has officially begun!
After only two practices, at which 6th-8th Graders worked together on conditioning, basic passing and footwork drills, the 7th and 8th Grade Soccer team had their first game at the end of September, facing off against LREI on the Pier 40 Rooftop field. An 8th Grade player new to the team this year scored an early first goal for VCS before LREI scored two goals to take the lead. Thanks to some great saves by our goalie and an amazing goal kicked by a 7th Grader, that game ended in a 2-2 tie.
On Wednesday, the 7th and 8th Grade team returned to Pier 40 for a game against the Town School in which we took an early lead and never looked back, with a final score of 5-2.
The 6th Grade Soccer team will be able to get in one more practice next week before they have their own opportunity to the play against the Town School in their first game of the season on Thursday, October 10th.
Volleyball players have had an excellent start to their season as well, with a 7th and 8th Grade match on Thursday against MMFS which VCS won 2-0. While the third set didn’t count, VCS was successful in winning all three sets and the team had many great moments throughout the game, including a 7-0 serving run and an 8-second rally with both teams battling back and forth for the point. The team worked well together, showcasing the skills they have been focusing on in practice: improving their overall communication on the court, tracking the ball early over the net, serving consistency and serving to specific areas on the court with power.
On Friday, 7th and 8th Graders played their second match, winning the first set but losing the second set to City & Country, who ultimately won the match.
The 6th Grade Volleyball team have been spending their practice time improving their existing skills, working together as a team and recognizing the importance of communication for success in this sport. They’ve been working hard to learn underhand serving, proper footwork and body positioning before contacting the volleyball – skills they are looking forward to utilizing in their first game on Monday, October 7th against St. Luke’s.
Congratulations to our 7th and 8th Grade Soccer and Volleyball teams on a great start to the fall sports season, and best of luck to our 6th Grade teams on their games next week!
