K-2nd/3rd Graders Celebrate the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In January, 3rd/4th-8th Grade students celebrated the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the help of visiting poets Ashley M. Jones and Darius Daughtry, who led students in poetry-writing workshops focused on the theme of injustice. These poems were presented at an assembly dedicated to Dr. King, showcasing how his legacy continues to meaningfully inspire today’s students. This week, students in K-2nd/3rd Grade held their own assembly honoring Dr. King, taking inspiration for their work from the following line in Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Leading up to the assembly, K-2nd/3rd Graders spent time thinking about the content of their own characters, completing a wide range of projects designed to demonstrate how visible and invisible aspects of their identities come together to make each class a unique and caring community. These projects – which took the form of a video, a sculpture, a puzzle, a song, a rap and two murals – were presented at Wednesday’s assembly, allowing students to not only expand their understanding of the nature of personal identity, but also get to know each other better!


Of course, this second Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly also included songs like “Mind on Freedom” and “The Dream of Martin Luther King,” as well as a short clip from his “I Have a Dream” speech. We were even fortunate enough to welcome two dancers from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to close out the celebration with a dance performance.

We are so proud of our students’ recent work around identity, and the awareness they’ve developed of the importance of placing their focus on the content of one’s character. Many of their MLK-inspired projects are now on display around the school, so parents are visitors can also learn more about the individual identities – and classroom communities – of K-2nd/3rd Graders at VCS!
