Opening Assembly 2019
With Kindergarteners completing their first full days of school this week, Monday was the perfect time to come together as a community and officially kick off the new school year with the Opening Assembly. This all-school annual meeting holds specific significance at VCS: it is where we collectively affirm our school values by singing songs like “This Land is Your Land” and “Under One Sky”; we ring the traditional start-of-school bell; we welcome new staff and students; and we are introduced to every member of the Class of 2020 – the new student leaders of the school.
This year, our 8th Graders not only shared their names and their histories at VCS, but some also prepared words of advice for younger students. In small groups, 8th Graders delivered age-appropriate messages to K-2nd Graders, 3rd-5th Graders, 6th Graders and 7th Graders. It was wonderful to hear our oldest students’ thoughts on what is most important at every stage of the VCS experience, and to see them already exhibiting the qualities we always hope to see in our graduates: kindness, compassion, self-awareness and gratitude for community. With the ringing of the bell, the 2019-2020 school year has officially begun, and it is sure to be a momentous one. We look forward to watching our students – and our school – grow this year, while remembering that the most important things, our community values, never change.
